Before we begin, I must tell you my favorite story of the movie and what I went through back in 2002 I believe to get what turned out to be one of the most sought after movies in the history of Ebay. I'm not kidding. This version of the film LITERALLY sold for hundreds of dollars and people paid it. In fact, TODAY (October 22nd 2012) the film is STILL going for hundreds of dollars. That is ridiculous to say the least, but collectors WILL pay for it. I've seen it:
Little Shop of Horrors (with Alternate Ending) DVD on Ebay RIGHT NOW
So back in1998 the movie was released on DVD for the first time and including the original (alternate) ending to the film. This ending was a very rough cut as it was black and white and wasn't completely finished, but it included the ending test audiences HATED. David Geffen at the time was NOT HAPPY when he found it was released and had the movie pulled from shelves altogether. I'm not sure if it was re-released or not, but it was only available for a few hours at most. Fast forward to 2002 when the 'Special Edition' was re-released to the masses WITHOUT the alternate ending.
Here's where it gets interesting:
So the original manufacturers of the DVD sent the print out to everyone *but* without realizing, they also had SEVERAL copies of the OOP DVD that looked almost EXACTLY the same as the new version. So what do you think happened?! Yup, you guessed it. THAT print was accidentally sent to all of the stores and people lucky enough to get it immediately threw it on Ebay. Now I didn't find out about it until maybe a week after its release, but I found if you knew the right skew on it, then you could pick it up and you too would have the version with the awesome original ending, so I immediately made several calls all over the valley and FOUND IT at ONE store in Mesa. I immediately took lunch and rushed down there only to find out it had JUST sold before I got there as the employees refused to hold it. :P
I was of course forced to buy the other one, but I was happy because I at least had this iconic film and wasn't forced to watch it on VHS anymore.
So here it is 2012 and I don't have the time I used to for browsing the internet so I had NO idea they were A) releasing the movie on BD and B) releasing the movie with the alternate ending so it came as quite a shock when I found a review of the movie on BD with not only the original ending including, but *TWO* versions of the film WITH the original ending IN FULL COLOR from original negatives AND including as part of the DIRECTOR'S CUT of the film. Keep in mind the other version had the original ending in its rough cut, but it also had the original ending including as a deleting scene NOT included as part of the original film.
I just got it today and I'm giddy as a schoolgirl. I'm going to watch it TONIGHT with my family and possibly Brandon Gray a buddy of mine!!! I'm NOT forced to buy it on Ebay for hundreds of dollars now and I'm NOT forced to watch it on YouTube if I want to see the original ending now.
Here are YouTube videos of both versions for those that don't want to either buy it or care:
Of course here is a picture of my movie
