OAKLAND: CORONER IDENTIFIES PEDESTRIAN KILLED ON I-880
OAKLAND (BCN)

The Alameda County coroner's bureau has identified 52-year-old Cynthia Rutgers as the pedestrian who was fatally struck Friday night on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland. The collision was reported around 11:15 p.m. just north of Hegenberger Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Rutgers was apparently running across the northbound lanes, from the shoulder of the highway toward the center divide, when she was hit by a silver sport utility vehicle, CHP Sgt. Sheri Jones said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the sport utility vehicle stopped after striking Rutgers. Anyone with more information on the case is asked to call the CHP at (510) 450-3821.

This does not sound like my mother, and I hope to hear more in the near future. WHY was she running across a freeway? I have many theories, however it appears she was trying to get home for the holidays as it was a week before Thanksgiving. I will be writing my mother's story (as I know it) soon, so stay tuned.
